Siqokoqela Mphoko, son of Zimbabwe’s former Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko, who is facing allegations of raping his 12-year-old niece, has been denied bail and remanded in custody to September 15.
Bulawayo magistrate Mark Dzia agreed with prosecutor Acquman Khupe that Mphoko should be remanded in custody as he is a flight risk.
Khupe told the court that the minor’s mother found out that her daughter, who was living with the Mphokos, has been allegedly raped when she unexpectedly returned recently from South Africa.
He told the court that a doctor who examined the child indicated that she was sexually active.
Mphoko, who is now at Khami Remand Prison, is facing three charges of rape.
He is also facing another charge of obstructing the course of justice as he allegedly bolted from Hillside Police Station on the first day he was arrested and then handed himself over to the police yesterday.
