Members of Operation Dudula, a group advocating for foreign nationals to be chased out of South Africa, has launched a national campaign advocating for the removal of foreign teachers and students from South African schools.
In this campaign, the Operation Dudula activists are visiting education offices, demanding that foreign teachers and students should leave.
Daniel Hadebe, leader of the Gauteng chapter, said, “All what we are saying is that they must employ South Africans first before they can consider employing foreigners.”
Grace Mamonyane, another leader of the same group, added that “we know that our own are not getting jobs because the posts have been occupied by foreigners.”
They urged education officials to also remove all students at South African schools, claiming that their presence is compromising the quality of education in the country.
Zimbabwean teacher, Bongani Nyathi, said Operation Dudula’s actions are shocking.
“It is very painful to see such things happening in South Africa, especially the crackdown on teachers at the moment.
Themba Ntabekhulu Phiri, another Zimbabwean teacher based in South Africa, scoffed at Operation Dudula’s activities, saying it is a waste of time.
VOA Studio 7 was unable to get comment from education officials as top officials were not responding to calls on their mobile phones.
Thousands of Zimbabwean teachers live and work in South Africa due to the harsh economic situation back home.
