WASHINGTON - The son of Zimbabwe’s late former president Robert Mugabe has appeared in court in Harare facing charges of malicious damage to property.

In a tweet, police confirmed the arrest of Robert Tinotenda Mugabe Junior.

Police said his friend Nkatazo Sindiso filed the complaint against him saying he destroyed property worth US$12,000 in Harare’s upmarket Strathaven suburb.

Police did not give any further details.

His attorney, Ashiel Mugiya, said court officials advised police and Mugabe to discuss this matter before it is brought to the Harare Magistrates' Court.

The accused, who is the second son of the late president, allegedly joined the ruling party last year following a defacto military coup in 2017.

His father appealed to the United Nations, African Union and other entities to intervene but all was in vain as President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his colleagues claimed that they wanted get rid of crooks that had surrounded the then president.

Mugabe ruled Zimbabwe for more than 37 years before he was toppled.
