The Supreme Court has given 12 Citizens Coalition for Change aspiring parliamentarians the green-light to contest the 2023 legislative elections in Bulawayo after they were barred last week by the High Court for allegedly filing their documents late in the Nomination Court in June.

According to Professor Welshman Ncube, one of the CCC candidates’ attorneys, said, “They reversed the judgment of the High Court disqualifying the 12 candidates. CCC candidates for Bulawayo are very relieved that finally justice has prevailed. It should have never gotten there because there was never a case. Thankfully the Supreme Court has now confirmed that it was improper to disqualify them in the first place. Now they can go back to campaigning.”

At least four candidates of other parties have also been cleared by the Supreme Court to contest the polls in Bulawayo.

Reacting to the latest developments in a Facebook message, CCC said, “Our 12 Bulawayo MPs are back on the ballot box. This was a desperate attempt by Zanu PF to smuggle their unelectable members into parliament. Bulawayo is an integral part of the election process and cannot be ignored.”

State attorneys have not yet indicated their next course of action in the matter.
