At least one million pilgrims in and around Rome have followed the funeral of Pope John Paul on giant screens set up to accommodate those who could not reach the Vatican.
Police say some 300,000 people from around the world filled St. Peter's Square and surrounding areas for Friday's funeral.
At least two million people filed past the pontiff's body in St. Peter's Basilica this week before authorities ended the public viewing to prepare for the funeral.
Hotels rapidly ran out of space this week and tent cities went up around Rome to make up for the lack of beds. Shopkeepers reported brisk sales of cards with pictures of the late pope, rosaries and other artifacts.
