Demonstrations during 2006 were mainly held by civic groups such as the Bulawayo-based Women of Zimbabwe Arise, the National Constitutional Assembly and the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition. Such groups stepped up at a time when the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change had divided itself into two factions which barely communicated or cooperated and, said critics, had become ineffective.
