The much-talked about Mbada Diamonds Cup roars into life Saturday in what promises to be an exciting show full of financial rewards for both players and clubs.
The tournament which is being sponsored to the tune of $1 million will run from September 15 to November 24 with the teams that will be eliminated in the first round getting $10,000 while those knocked out in the second round settling for $20,000.
Mbada Diamonds Corporate Services executive, George Manyaya, said the losing semi-finalists are expected to take home $30,000 and runners-up $60,000.
The winners of the tournament last year, Dynamos Football Club, took home $75,000 but Manyaya said times have changed as more money has been set aside for this year’s winners.
Manyaya said the most outstanding players of the tournament are expected to be rewarded.
Mbada Diamonds would also pay each player an appearancce fee of $100 for every match and $150 for seven members of the technical team.
Castle Lager Premier Soccer League chief executive Kennedy Ndebele said they are hoping for an improved tournament this year.
The winners of the Mbada Diamonds Cup are set to represent Zimbabwe in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Highlanders Football Club take on Blue Rangers at Barbourfields Stadium; Monomotapa FC versus Hardbody FC; Caps United take on Motor Action, Dynamos versus Quelaton and FC Platinum will clash with Harare City.
Meanwhile, some Zimbabwean women say government should seriously consider funding the sports sector in order to economically empower girls.
