The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) wing of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai says all candidates for the parliamentary, mayoral and council seats will be subjected to primary elections.

Mr. Tsvangirai is reported to have cleared the confusion surrounding the issue after reports emerged early last month that sitting candidates would not face primary elections.

The prime minister was in Mutare on the final leg of his countrywide tour of provincial leadership.

A newly-formed pressure group within the party called MDC-T Supporters’ Forum has described as “undemocratic” the process being proposed.

The group, which draws its membership mostly from Harare suburbs, said in a statement that the proposed selection process is fundamentally flawed.

"First, current MPs, senators and councilors fear that primary elections would cost them their jobs. There are also those who did not make it in 2008,” said the group.

In noted that “these are a group of political opportunists who take parliament and council as a commercial enterprise where they can earn salaries and make a living instead of ensuring public service delivery. Zimbabweans expect nothing short of real change.”

Deputy MDC-T spokesman Joel Gabhuza explained to VOA Studio 7 how the process to select candidates would be done.
