South Africans to Continue Trying to Broker Sustainable Zimbabwe Power-Sharing Deal

Representatives of President Jacob Zuma were to return to Harare later this week for another effort at breaking deadlocks over the top positions at the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and the Office of the Attorney General

South African facilitators say they will continue to engage Zimbabwe's unity government partners on the report due from submitted party negotiators this week on the status of their discussions aimed at settling the central issues stalling the full implementation of the 2008 Global Political Agreement.

Representatives of President Jacob Zuma were to return to Harare later this week for another effort at breaking deadlocks over the top positions at the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and the Office of the Attorney General, as well as provincial governor appointments and the distribution of ministerial powers.

ZANU-PF has vowed not to concede on such points until Westerners lift sanctions on President Robert Mugabe and his inner circle.

But sources close to the process told VOA that the three governing principals – Mr. Mugabe, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara – will meet very soon to discuss a so-called implementation matrix to put into effect agreements which have been reached concerning a land audit, electoral reforms and other issues.

Zuma advisor Lindiwe Zulu told VOA Studio 7 reporter Blessing Zulu that further consultations with the governing parties in Harare are needed once Mr. Zuma and his facilitators have seen the report.

Political analyst Msekiwa Makwanya said Mr. Zuma may be able to break the deadlock in Harare.
