WASHINGTON DC —
The United States says it is prepared to consider rolling back sanctions imposed on President Robert Mugabe and his inner circle in response to positive progress on Zimbabwe’s part in meeting its reform commitments under the global political agreement and Southern African Development Community (SADC) road map.
In a statement, the U.S Embassy in Harare said Friday America’s recent issuance of a general license to the Agricultural Development Bank and Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe is a reward for the holding of a peaceful constitutional referendum in Zimbabwe.
It said the general licence effectively represents the suspension of sanctions on these banks. Americans and companies are now permitted to engage in financial transactions with the two banks.
They have been prohibited from doing so since 2008 when they were placed on the Specially Designated Nationals sanctions list.
The Embassy said its policies reflect a continuing commitment to help the people of Zimbabwe restore the stable, peaceful and democratic country they rightly deserve.
It further said the U.S has made its policies clear of meeting “action for action” in response to progress on the goals Zimbabweans set for themselves in the GPA.
The U.S Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control issued the general licence to the two banks in consultation with the U.S State Department.
