Zimbabwe Proposes to Amend New Constitution

President Robert Mugabe's party has the parliamentary majority to amend the constitution.

Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Justice Virginia Mabhiza brew a shocker Friday when she said a constitutional amendment bill is on its way as there is need to make sure that the new constitution is aligned to the people’s aspirations and is more practical.

Mabhiza made the remarks at the Judicial Services Commission Stakeholder Engagement Workshop in Harare.

Lawyers who attended the workshop told VOA Studio 7 that they were taken aback by the remarks.

Zanu-PF with a clear two thirds majority can amend the constitution. Efforts to get a comment from Mabhiza were futile. But Deputy Justice Minister Fortune Chasi told parliament Thursday that there might be need to re-introduce a clause in the new constitution to empower the president to officially open all parliamentary sittings.

Lawyer and Member of Parliament Jessie Majome of the Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai said amending the constitution will be a disaster.
