HARARE —
The race for the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title has reached the home stretch.
With the top four teams separated only by three points, the football family is playing a guessing game on who will win the league title as the gap between log leaders Highlanders and fourth placed FC Platinum is only three points.
But some are of the opinion that the guessing game could end within the next 36 hours, contending that the results of this weekend’s matches could determine who will win the title.
Highlanders, who lead the table with 51 points, travel to Harare to face third-placed Harare City who have 50 points. Second-placed defending champions Dynamos who have 50 points, travel to Bulawayo for a tough assignment against Chicken Inn, and football analyst and radio commentator Mugove Chigada says the going is tough for all the top four teams.
Even Caps United supporter Vincent Bushu, whose team is out of the title race as it goes to the wire, thinks the game between Bosso and the Sunshine Boys holds the key to the destiny of the league championship.
Fourth-placed FC Platinum, who have 48 points and play How Mine, are the dark horses for the championship. But Bushu thinks Highlanders has it all wrapped up with that controversial 1-0 win over Shabanie, adding that victory over Harare City will give them the title.
Warriors Fan Club member Eddison Mbariro agrees, saying Highlanders will be the 2013 league champions.
This is the third year running that the league title has gone to the wire. Last year, Dynamos had to pip Highlanders on the last day of play beating the Bulawayo giants on goal difference.
Two years ago, it was Dynamos again who also got the better of FC Platinum, again on goal difference, after both teams had finished with 58 points.
The winner of the league title will have the unenviable task of reviving Zimbabwe’s flagging spirit in the CAF Champions League.
