Legal woes for the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) executive continued this week with the arrest of the organization’s president Pride Mkono, who was detained by Gweru police on Thursday as he tried to bail out secretary general Tryvine Musokeri.
Mkono, who was also arrested for failing to attend a court case, was remanded in custody by a local magistrate.
The pair, failed to appear in court to face charges of violating some provisions of the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) for addressing a public meeting at Midlands State University earlier this year.
Musokeri was arrested in September and released on Wednesday.
Upon his release, he vowed to continue speaking for students saying "I have an indomitable will to see my colleagues attending school without dropping out because of an irresponsible government that buys expensive vehicles for ministers but fails to pay fees for students."
Mkono is set to appear in court on Monday.
ZINASU spokesman Zachariah Mushawatu condemned the arrest in an interview with VOA saying the police should release the student leaders without conditions.
He said they are working flat out to assist students in Zimbabwe who are struggling to raise money for paying tuition fees.
