Measles is suspected as the cause of the deaths of 10 infants in Bikita, Masvingo province, Zimbabwe, following an outbreak in neighboring Manicaland province which claimed the lives of 22 babies last month.
Reports said the latest deaths occurred in families belonging to the Apostolic Faith sect, which has resisted vaccination campaigns
Health Minister Henry Madzorera told VOA that a medical team has been sent to the stricken district to try to contain the measles outbreak.
Physician Ngonizashe Madidi of United Bulawayo Hospitals told VOA Studio 7 reporter Patience Rusere that such outbreaks show the country has lost a lot of ground in the past decade of political crisis and economic decline.
