Zimbabwe's National Healing Organ Drafts Code Of Conduct for Political Parties

The organ's co-chairperson Sekai Holland said the code seeks to have a punitive impact on offenders and instill discipline among political players

Zimbabwe's Organ on National Healing, Reconciliation and Integration says it has finished drafting a code of conduct to hold political parties perpetrating violence to account for their actions.

The organ's co-chairperson, Sekai Holland told the state-controlled Herald newspaper that the draft has been sent to various political parties.

"It will be voluntary to start with. But it will have a punitive mechanism for enforcement and possibly instilling discipline," Holland said.

The code emphasizes that political parties should be able to campaign and disseminate their political ideas around the country without fear.

Political commentator Alois Dzvairo, also Chairman of the National Constitutional Assembly, said it is doubtful the code will make any difference to stem political violence because it does not have legal teeth.

Zimbabwe has witnessed a resurgence of political violence in recent weeks blamed on rowdy ZANU-PF youths who blocked a rally by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in Chitungwiza last week and assaulted his MDC supporters.
