Ten Zimbabweans Perish in House Fire In Johannesburg Suburb

Police in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Friday confirmed that 10 Zimbabweans died in a house fire the previous night in the Yeoville section of the city.

Superintendent Lobishi Motaung of the Yeoville police station said it was believed that the fire was caused by an electrical failure, but that it remained under investigation.

Fire engulfed a house where some 32 people, mostly Zimbabweans immigrants, were living, local sources said. A Masvingo family of four was among the dead, they said.

Zimbabwean Began Hunda, a resident of the densely populated suburb, told reporter Patience Rusere the incident illustrates the conditions in which Zimbabweans live in South Africa. More than 2 million Zimbabweans have emigrated to South Africa to escape political repression or the punishing economic climate at home.
