Police Tuesday arrested 11 members of the activist group Women of Zimbabwe Arise as they emerged from a meeting in the Nketa suburb of Bulawayo, sources said.
A spokeswoman said some of the WOZA activists were assaulted by the police and sustained serious injuries. A police spokesman refused to comment.
Last week WOZA distributed an open letter to the government and the opposition, demanding that they cooperate to turn the economy around. It threatened to take to the streets if its demands were not met.
WOZA National Coordinator Jenni Williams said riot police arrested 11 members of her group as they left a meeting that had been invaded by plainclothes police officers who demanded to hear the proceedings. They were released Wednesday without charge.
