Zimbabwe Constitutional Committee Regroups Amid Financial Difficulties

One of the co-chairman of Zimbabwe's Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional Reform said the panel held an emergency meeting this week to discuss operations.

Committee Co-Chairman Douglas Mwonzora of the Movement for Democratic Change formation of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai said his panel disclaimed reports that its staff had gone on strike over unpaid expense allowances and a general lack of funding.

The meting discussed the need for a secretariat to run the committee's affairs.

The state-controlled Sunday Mail newspaper reported this week that committee members had ceased work demanding unpaid allowances, but committee sources said it was stated at the meeting that no such interruption of committee work had occurred.

Committee Co-Chairman Mwonzora told reporter Jonga Kandemiiri of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that the meeting was called to reaffirm the commitment of its members.
