Zimbabwean University Students Arrested at Bindura Science Institution

Zimbabwean police arrested four students at Bindura University of Science Education on Monday for "conduct that is likely to breach the peace," student sources said.

The four students were still being held on Tuesday at the Bindura police station but were expected to appear in court for arraignment on Wednesday.

The Zimbabwe National Students Union said the students were arrested while campaigning for student representative elections.

Nine students were arrested Friday shortly before President Robert Mugabe officiated at a graduation ceremony on suspicions they would disrupt it, but were soon released.

Student Union spokesperson Blessing Vava told VOA Studio 7 reporter Patience Rusere that a new wave of arrests is taking place at the country's institutions of higher learning.
