Zimbabwe Lawyers Demand Resignation of Attorney General, Alleging Abuses

The Law Society of Zimbabwe has called for the resignation of Attorney General Johannes Tomana, calling him personally responsible for the harassment of its members.

The demand was contained in a petition submitted Monday to the Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa after a march through Harare by lawyers who had previously attended court proceedings in the case of their colleague Mordecai Mahlangu.

Mahlangu stands accused of obstructing justice for sending Tomana a letter to protest certain actions taken in the case of Roy Bennett, treasurer of the Movement for Democratic Change formation of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, facing terrorism charges.

Law Society of Zimbabwe Spokesman Chris Mhike told VOA Studio 7 reporter Jonga Kandemiiri that numerous members of the bar including human rights defender Alec Muchadehama have been subjected to official harassment.

Correspondent Thomas Chiripasi reported that in a key state witness in Bennett's trial in Harare High Court on charges including possession of weapons for terrorism and incitement to insurgency contradicted himself under cross-examination by defender Beatrice Mtetwa.
