Makoni accuses leaders in the coalition government of failing to work together towards creating an environment that will see the country holding a violent-free election

Former Zimbabwean finance minister and leader of the Mavambo/Khusile/Dawn party, Simba Makoni, says the country should guard against President Mugabe’s machinations and refuse to be intimidated into participating in elections they know will not be free and fair.

Makoni accuses leaders in the coalition government of failing to work together towards creating an environment that will see the country holding a violent-free election. He said the possibility of the violence that affected the 2008 elections re-visiting thew country remains high in the absence of reforms.

He said unity government leaders, President Robert Mugabe, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara, should “go back to the letter and spirit of the Global Political Agreement” that saw the formation of the inclusive government.

Makoni said all outstanding GPA issues should be implemented with the view of building a better Zimbabwe and protecting the selfish interests of the three parties in the government.

Makoni, who contested in the 2008 elections after leaving ZANU-PF over what he said were irreconcilable differences, told VOA Studio 7 reporter Jonga Kandemiiri that Mr. Mugabe and his coalition partners should step down and pave way for a transitional authority that will genuinely lead a national healing and reconciliation process, paving the way for free elections.
