The Media Institute of Southern Africa or MISA-Zimbabwe has expressed concern over threats by President Robert Mugabe against journalists he says are falsely reporting that he is scared of former vice president Joyce Mujuru.
Mr. Mugabe was quoted in the state-run Herald newspaper on Wednesday as saying “the journalism we are experiencing is not the journalism we expect. If we begin to take control now, rigid control, people should not cry foul.”
The president was venting his anger over the way some private media reported on Mujuru’s recent manifesto that was widely interpreted as a prelude to a political party launch.
Misa director Nhlanhla Ngwenya told Studio 7 that Mugabe’s threats have no place in a democracy.
“We are disturbed by the threats that he issued against the media yesterday. More so, they come against the backdrop of a new constitution that guarantees the freedom of expression,” said Ngwenya.
