Mugabe Says No Cabinet Posts for Losers

President Robert Mugabe says those who would have lost their bid for a seat in the legislature in the coming elections will not be considered for cabinet positions even if there is another power-sharing government.

In an interview with state radio, Mr. Mugabe singled out Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara and Industry Minister Welshman Ncube saying the two are in Cabinet even though they were “dishonored by the people.”

“We were able to set up a Global Political Agreement with some who had won the elections and others who had lost,” he said.

“Both professors for example Welshman Ncube and Arthur Mutambara had lost. They had been beaten but they came in as honourable ministers who had been dishonoured by the people. It won’t happen again.”

The new constitution, which came into effect last month, allows a president to appoint five ministers from outside parliament if need be.

Political analyst, Dr. Nkululeko Sibanda said Mr. Mugabe is putting the cart before the horse about dictating Cabinet terms even if there should be another unity government.
