Nestle's Zimbabwe Workers Suffer in Dispute With Mugabe-Owned Dairy

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions President Lovemore Matombo said the Nestlé production halt will affect hundreds of other downstream jobs given the scope of the firm's activities in the country

About 80 jobs are on the line at Nestlé Zimbabwe as the Swiss-based company evaluates its position in the country after suspending operations last week in response to pressure to purchase milk from a dairy company controlled by the family of President Robert Mugabe with which it severed ties in October.

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions President Lovemore Matombo said the Nestlé production halt will affect hundreds of other so-called downstream jobs given the scope of the company's operations in Zimbabwe.

A Nestlé spokeswoman told VOA Thursday that discussions with Harare were under way, adding that a statement is expected to be issued Friday.

Matombo told VOA Studio 7 reporter Patience Rusere that Nestlé workers should be allowed to make a living while the issue is being resolved.
