BUHERA, MANICALAND —
The late Movement for Democratic Change security director, Benson Muchineuta, who died on Monday was laid to rest Wednesday at his rural home in Buhera following a funeral wake attended by former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.
Speaking at the burial of his late bodyguard in Hande Village in Buhera communal lands, Mr. Tsvangirai said he was saddened by Muchineuta’s death.
Muchineuta, who was known in MDC circles as Okollo, passed on at his Harare residence after what his family says was a short illness. The cause of death has not been made public.
Mr. Tsvangirai said what pains him most is that “Okollo” died before the country realized the democracy that he was fighting for since the formation of the MDC in 1999. The former prime minister said Muchineuta was instrumental in the formation of the labor-backed party.
The MDC founding president said it is disheartening that many Zimbabweans are now suffering following Zanu-PF’s so-called victory in the July 31 elections.
He said Muchineuta was one of the many MDC-T cadres who wanted to see a better life for all citizens.
He also described the deceased as a very brave and committed man who stood firm in the face of violence and intimidation perpetrated by Zanu-PF and state security agents since MDC’s formation.
Washington Gaga, who worked in the same department with Okollo, said the gap that was left by the deceased will be difficult to fill.
Family spokesperson Alwin Maingehama said the Muchineuta family has lost an advisor and breadwinner.
Muchineuta, who died at the age of 44, is survived by his wife and a number of children.
Other dignitaries present at the funeral included MDC-T spokesperson, Douglas Mwonzora, and former National Housing Minister Giles Mutsekwa.
