The future of the new constitution has become more uncertain after Zanu PF told the state-run Herald newspaper that there were 30 outstanding issues that need ironing out before the draft is wrapped up, not six issues as all parties had previously been discussing.
Zanu PF representative to the Constitution Parliamentary Committee (COPAC), Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana, said that his party wants a new constitution, but it will not accept a constitution which compromises what he called “the ideals and values of the liberation struggle.”
Zanu PF leader and President Robert Mugabe recently said that if there is no draft by Christmas he will dissolve Parliament and call for elections under the Lancaster House Constitution.
Mister Mangwana told Studio 7 that some of the contentious issues were raised at the Second All Stakeholders’ Conference.
A partner at COPAC, Constitution and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Eric Matinenga, while confirming there were still sticking issues, said he was surprised to hear about the jump in their number.
