Harare Secures Funds for Mobile Voter Registration

WASHINGTON DC —  Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa on Wednesday said the government has secured funds to launch the much-awaited mobile voter registration exercise.

The exercise, which begins Monday next week, will allow ordinary Zimbabweans to acquire identity cards and birth certificates to register as voters.

Only $8 million was made available by the treasury against a $13 million initial budget.

The registration exercise will be ward-based with each requiring at least one vehicle. The mobile registration exercise failed to kick off in January this year due to lack of resources.

MDC T spokesman Douglas Mwonzora said despite the delays his party is happy the process is finally underway.

Zanu PF spokesman Rugare Gumbo said the mobile voter registration is welcome, adding his party had all along been urging its supporters to go to the local Registrar General’s Office to register as voters.

Spokesman Nhlanhla Dube of the Ncube MDC formation said $8 million is not enough to cover every district in the country ahead of the polls.
