Zimbabweans in rural areas are coming up with some ideas of tackling the current dry spell claiming the lives of hundreds of livestock.
Some of the villagers are in Tsholotsho, Matabeleland north province.
Vumani Ndlovu, coordinator of the Rural Communities Empowerment Trust, said people have various ways of solving their own problems.
He said they have been conducting community dialogue meetings which bring together people and their leaders to discuss issues affecting them.
“They discuss issues pertaining to service delivery, we have been holding meetings that are centered on the drought that is bedeviling the communities following the poor rains,” he said.
He noted that people generally come up with local community solutions to most of these challenges.
“One of the ideas is in terms of tackling the high cattle mortality (as a result of the current dry spell). They advised each other to sell at least one beast to buy stock feed in order to save the rest of the cattle herd.”
He said other ideas included ways of pooling resources in order to lower the high school dropout rate in the region.
