The Southern African Development Community Lawyers Association is urging the regional group to find a long-term resolution to the crisis in Zimbabwe, urging President Robert Mugabe to engage with South African President Jacob Zuma, SADC mediator in Harare, to construct a lasting political solution to the impasse there.

The group called it disturbing that Mr. Mugabe has spurned the counsel of his regional peers. It said Mr. Mugabe's has accused Britain, the United States and the European Union of meddling in African affairs, but he has not heeded African advice.

In a recent meeting of the SADC troika on politics, defense and security in Zambia, Zuma and other Southern African leaders condemned mounting political violence, arbitrary arrests and intimidation of political and human rights activists in Zimbabwe.

The lawyers called this an important step toward a lasting solution.

SADC Lawyers Association President Thoba Poyo-Dlwati told VOA Studio 7 reporter Tatenda Gumbo that as the SADC mediators adopt an expanded role in the mediation process, Harare should welcome their recommendations.
