Zimbabwe PM's Party Probes Corruption in Local Authorities

Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's MDC formation says it is continuing with efforts to root out corruption within local authorities being led by its mayors and councilors.

The party has sent out a probe team to Harare, Gweru, Bulawayo, Marondera and other cities and towns to investigate allegations of graft that have tainted the MDC's image.

The probe team will also try ascertain the levels to which interference by local government minister Ignatius Chombo has affected the running of the local authorities. The MDC accuses Chombo of using his ministerial powers to destabilize its councils.

The probe team has since been to cities like Gweru where residents applauded the MDC for initiating the investigation.

MDC local government secretary, Sesil Zvidzai, told VOA the committee's not targeting the councilors but was working to expose Chombo for the hard work the party says he's putting in to destabilize MDC-led councils.

Some of the councilors feel lawmakers, worried about their constituencies, are trying to smear them so they can hold onto their parliamentary seats.
