The MDC-T’s Harare province is investigating allegations of corruption being levelled against some of his party councilors alongside their Zanu PF counterparts.
This follows the arrest of three councillors on allegations of stealing $700 from the Harare Municipal Medical Aid Society and corruptly allocating residential stands to themselves.
The investigation commission has been ordered by party leader Morgan Tsvangirai to report to him in the next 14 days.
In a statement, MDC-T secretary for local government, Eddie Cross, said his party has a zero tolerance policy to corruption and abuse of office by elected officials.
The allegations made in the Herald regarding the possible abuse of office by Harare City Councilors drawn from both the MDC and Zanu PF and allegations against the Chairman of the Medical Aid scheme for Harare Council Staff, Mr. Jogee, are of great concern to the MDC, said Cross.
This is especially against the background of a forensic audit of the Premier Medical Aid Society which disclosed massive payments to a number of people, including senior staff.
“Once this report is received, the Party will decide on appropriate disciplinary action for any officials involved if wrong doing is confirmed,” said Cross.
Commenting, People’s Democratic Party spokesman Jacob Mafume said corruption is a major cause for concern in the country but added he does not expect Tsvangirai to take action against the councillors after the investigations.
The ruling Zanu PF party did not respond to calls for a comment on its councilors.
