Coach Calisto Pasuwa

Zimbabwe Warriors coach Callisto Pasuwa has stepped down following a dismal performance of his national squad in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Gabon.

Pasuwa told the state-controlled Herald newspaper that he was taking full responsibility for the poor performance of the Warriors that anchored Group B of the AFCON.

According to the newspaper, he is expected to discuss the issue with his manager, Gibson Mahachi, and ZIFA boss, Phillip Chiyangwa.

His contract was set to expire after returning from the AFCON finals. Pasuwa has been in charge of the Warriors for two years.

He is the second coach participating at the AFCON finals to resign. Algerian coach, Georges Leekens, threw in the towel when the Desert Foxes were eliminated from the tournament.

However, he told a local independent newspaper that ZIFA is expected to make a decision about his future with the Warriors.

Meanwhile, some Zimbabweans have already indicated that Warriors coach Callisto Pasuwa should step down following a dismal performance in the AFCON finals.

In an informal survey on VOA Studio 7 twitter handle, 52 percent of respondents said Pasuwa should step down. Forty-four percent indicated that he should remain Warriors coach.

At least 4 percent of the respondents said they were not sure about what Pasuwa should do now.

The survey was a small sample of Zimbabweans on Twitter, not fully representative of the nation's population of about 14 million.

The Warriors were eliminated from the AFCON finals on Monday after they were thrashed 4-2 by Tunisia in a Group B encounter in Franceville, Gabon.

They were also beaten by Senegal and settled for a draw with Algeria, who were also sent home following a lackluster performance in Africa's premier football event.
