Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s wife, Marry, is in police custody in Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, facing charges of attempting to forge the couple’s marriage certificate, money laundering and externalizing more than US$1 million.
Commissioner John Makamure of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Committee or ZACC tells VOA Zimbabwe Service that Marry Chiwenga is locked up at Rhodesville Police Station. She is expected to appear in court tomorrow (Monday).
She allegedly attempted to forge a marriage certificate while her husband was on a deathbed in South Africa before he was airlifted to China where he was hospitalized for five months.
Retired General Chiwenga, who recently disclosed that he was suffering from idiopathic oesophageal stricture, is in the process of divorcing Marry, whose previous husband, former soccer player Shingi Kaondera, is also accusing her of forging the couple’s divorce certificate. Vice President Chiwenga played a key role in toppling the late former president Robert Mugabe in a defacto military coup in 2017.
Attorneys representing Marry Chiwenga were not reachable for comment.
