The move will see tariffs dropping from about 23 cents per minute to 15 cents.

Zimbabwe’s three mobile phone service providers, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, Net-One and Telecel Zimbabwe have agreed to slash voice tariffs by almost 30 percent in compliance with a directive issued by the Posts and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ).

In a statement, Econet Wireless said Thursday it has reduced tariffs to 15 cents per minute for intra-company mobile calls and 16 cents per minute to local networks with effect from January 1st, 2015.

The move will see tariffs dropping from about 23 cents per minute to 15 cents. In October last year POTRAZ ordered the three companies to reduce their tariffs after carrying out a study, which revealed that users were being overcharged by 30 percent.

Economist and Employers Confederation of Zimbabwe director, John Mufukare, told VOA Studio 7 the slashing of tariffs is a most welcome development considering that Zimbabwe’s tariffs were the highest in the southern African region.
