Residents of Harare’s Mabvuku and Tafara suburbs on Wednesday teamed up with the city council and Lafarge Cement Zimbabwe Limited to conduct a clean up campaign at a time when the local authority is failing to provide such services due to various challenges.
Edith Matekaire, marketing and communications executive of the cement processing company, told VOA Studio 7 the campaign resulted in the setting up of a waste management center.
Matekaire said the center will be used by local people for using garbage to generate money while getting rid of trash.
She said this project is part of the company’s move to ensure that all workers, who apparently live near the cement factory, are healthy and stay in a clean environment.
Most local authorities in Zimbabwe are failing to collect garbage due to financial challenges and general shortage of refuse collection trucks.
