The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has barred former central bank governor Gideon Gono from filling a parliamentary seat left vacant by the late Senator Kumbirai Kangai.
In a letter written to Zanu PF chairman, Simon Khaya Moyo, ZEC said it disqualified the former boss of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, whose name was forwarded to the commission by his Zanu PF party, due to the fact that he is not a registered voter in Manicaland province.
In the letter dated September 17th, 2014, ZEC advised Gono to instead apply to the commission and seek ways to transfer his vote from Harare to Buhera west as the only practical way around the current difficulty.
Studio 7 failed to get a comment from ZEC chairperson Rita Makarau and Gono, who were said to be attending crucial meetings.
But Zanu PF spokesman Rugare Gumbo tells Studio 7 he was not aware of the ZEC letter and is not willing to discuss the issue in the media before it is discussed by the party’s politburo.
Election Resource Centre director, Tawanda Chimhini said ZEC is just following the electoral law that stipulates that one has to be a registered voter in that constituency to be able to stand for election.
