The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has deployed its game rangers to capture or kill hyenas following reports the wild animals were attacking people and eating their livestock in rural districts like Buhera and Gutu.
In an interview, ZimParks director general, Edson Chidziya, said the wild animals have to be killed as they have developed human eating behaviour.
Last week five people, including a 10 year-old girl, were seriously injured when they were attacked by hyenas in broad daylight. They are being treated at Murambinda and Parirenyatwa hospitals.
Gutu South Ward 27 councillor, Jeffrey Tangemhare, said several people in his area have lost their livestock to the marauding animals. He said they were moving in packs of five or more.
Tangemhare said though they have not yet attacked people in the area, the situation may get out of hand if they are not killed or removed from the area.
Gutu South lawmaker, Paul Chimedza, said hyenas and lions are a menace in his constituency.
He confirmed ZimParks had moved into some of the wards to deal with the situation. He said ZimParks has already captured one of the lions.
President Robert Mugabe this week said the government is concerned by the hyena terrorizing villagers in rural areas.
He said this in a conversation with journalists at State House following the swearing-in of his new cabinet.
