Two prominent lawyers have lauded the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission for correctly interpreting the law when it barred former Reserve Bank governor Gideon Gono from filling the Buhera senate seat left vacant following the death of Kumbira Kangai.
Zanu PF had forwarded Gono’s name as its choice to fill in the post, but ZEC disqualified him on the basis that he was not a registered voter in Manicaland province.
Prominent lawyer, Terrence Hussein, who also represents President Robert Mugabe in most cases, said ZEC chairperson Rita Makarau was spot-on in coming up with that decision.
Hussein told Studio 7 the only logical move is for Zanu PF to use its majority in parliament to change the constitution.
He also said Gono can also take ZEC to court to challenge the decision, a process he noted may take long.
But Advocate Tawanda Zhuwarara, who concurred with Hussein that ZEC acted reasonably, said even if Zanu PF amends the constitution, Gono should have been on the party list for the 2013 elections to be eligible.
