Transport Minister Obert Mpofu says plans are underway to disburse money collected from tollgates monthly to all provinces to enable timeous rehabilitation and construction of roads, amid plans to build 30 more tollgates throughout Zimbabwe to boost the financing of these road projects.
The Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (ZINARA), which is administering the fund, says it is currently collecting $3 million monthly from the existing 12 tollgates; the amount which it argues is not enough to fully rehabilitate the roads.
Emphasizing the importance of toll gates, Mpofu says it is important for the country to generate its own funds to finance road projects, instead orf relying on loans, which accumulate exorbitant interests.
Mpofu tells V-O-A's Sithandekile Mhlanga his ministry will also release frequent reports on the amounts collected and the disbursements of the funds to the public, and urges motorists to support the initiative.
