WASHINGTON DC —
The government has spent more than $20 million buying vehicles for cabinet ministers, top state officials, securocrats and other arms of government believed to have played a key role in spearheading Zanu-PF’s victory in the July 31st elections.
According to the privately-owned Zimbabwe Independent newspaper, some of the beneficiaries of top range vehicles like BMWs and wide-bodied Ford Rangers include the Registrar-General’s Office, police commissioners, army commanders and district administrators.
They are believed to have secured the Zanu-PF victory which gives the party the power to change the constitution. An Israeli company, Nikuv (Pvt) Ltd, is alleged to have also manipulated the voters’ roll in favour of President Robert Mugabe’s party.
Zanu-PF has neither confirmed nor denied its links with the company blamed by the opposition for masterminding Mugabe’s victory.
The Registrar-General’s Office has failed to provide an electronic voters roll amid fears that the register contains duplicated names of voters in Zanu-PF strongholds. Potential voters in MDC strongholds were allegedly left out of the voters roll.
There was no comment from Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa on the vehicle purchasing spree as he was not answering calls on his mobile phone.
