Unidentified intruders on Monday night shot and white Zimbabwean farmer Kobus Joubert, a former president of the Zimbabwe Tobacco Association, beat his wife and looted the house, taking guns and US$10,000 cash.

Commercial Farmers Union Vice President Charles Taffs told VOA Studio 7 reporter Blessing Zulu that initial reports pointed to armed robbery though other possibilities for the killing were not being excluded. Police spokesman Superintendent Andrew Phiri said however that all the evidence and testimony pointed to armed robbery.

Joubert was evicted from his property in Chegutu, Mashonaland West province, in 2002 at the height of the farm invasions through which the land reform program launched by President Robert Mugabe was often implemented. But his farm was later returned to him upon the intervention of the late Vice President Joseph Msika.
