Zimbabwe's Inclusive Government Spurs Growth In The Tourism Sector

Zimbabwean tourism receipts are on the rise with some 362,000 tourists visiting the country since the inception of the unity government compared with 100,000 last year.

Figures released at an investment conference in South Africa this week showed tourism earnings of some US$100 million so far in 2009 against just US$40 million in 2005. A decade ago the country posted annual receipts of US$250 million.

Zimbabwe Council of Tourism president Emmanuel Fundira attributes the bounce in revenues to the country’s relative stability since February.

African Sun chief executive Shingi Munyenza told the conference that Zimbabwe hotels have been running at 70 percent of capacity lately.

Zimbabwe Tourism Authority chief executive Karikoga Kaseke tells Sandra Nyaira that the lifting of travel warnings by European Union member countries and others has helped boost tourism and receipts in national coffers.
